Seagreen Insights

Our mission is to accelerate investment and innovation in the seaweed sector by raising consumer awareness.

At Seagreen insights we are working to ensure that seaweed becomes a mainstream consumer item and economically viable input thus providing the world with a dependable and regenerative natural resource for our future.

What we do

Research & Education

We focus on research that helps seaweed producers and retailers understand what consumers want. We also create promotional activities to share important information about seaweed and boost consumer awareness.

Advocacy

We track laws and funding that impact the U.S. seaweed industry and advocate for its growth. This involves educating lawmakers about the benefits of seaweed, assessing public funding options, and monitoring changing regulations for seaweed farms and products.

Promotion of Seaweed-based products

We encourage the use of seaweed products. As new seaweed innovations arise, it's important to educate the public about the benefits and qualities of seaweed in daily items. We highlight a product each month, share updates on social media, and participate in events as speakers and sponsors.

About Us

Seagreen Insights is a nonprofit organization working towards the expansion of seaweed as a biomass to make products.

We research and analyze the global seaweed trade, from farm to retail shelves, working collaboratively with producers, researchers, other support organizations and government officials. Our work is based on deep experience in global supply chains and trade, consumer product goods (CPG), food science and industrial relations. We recognize that the sector, globally, is accelerating innovation and applications of seaweed biomass and we hope to support that growth through greater awareness among consumers, policymakers and entrepreneurs and investors. Ultimately, we believe seaweed is a more environmental-friendly resource whose importance as a nature-based solution must be further promoted and adopted.

Meet the Team

Mike Blakeley

Co-Founder

Mike Blakeley co-founded Seagreen Insights on his belief that seaweed is one of the most important biomasses for our future. He has a deep understanding of ocean value chains having founded and managed his own seafood company that exported products to markets in Japan, the U.S. and Europe.

Mike went on to receive his MA in International Policy Studies before going to work for an international consultancy that advised governments on trade policy and industry promotion. Among his many achievements in this role was the management of a Hong Kong-based industry trade group that served the world’s largest apparel brands. He also ran a program in Morocco that led to several agriculture products breaking into the U.S. consumer packaged goods (CPG) markets.

Most of all he loves the ocean, is an experienced paddleboarder and is passionate about the Blue Economy.

With a M.A. in International Policy Studies from Middlebury Institute of International Studies of Monterey, Elaine has worked in the nonprofit sector for more than 20 years. She has lived and worked in different countries, such as, Ireland, Romania (Peace Corps), Madagascar, Morocco, and Thailand, which gives her a global perspective on the climate crisis and how it is impacting our world.

Elaine is a musician and baker. She runs a vegan micro-bakery selling cookies that are 100% plant-based and gluten free varieties. In addition, she plays electric guitar and sings in a post-punk band.

“I love foraging, cooking, and learning about seaweed. I use kelp for flavor and nutritional benefits in a variety of meals, such as cooking beans or tofu scrambles. I use cosmetic products with kelp extract for moisturizing my skin. And recently, I incorporated biodegradable algae ink for my bakery’s logo, which is super exciting since I’ve invested in all the packaging being compostable and recyclable. I’m trying to make the best decisions for our planet, and I know seaweed is helping in many ways. “- Elaine Blakeley
